Carrières et domaines en forte croissance au Canada (article en anglais)
par Johnny Russo, Rédacteur chez ResumeEdge.ca
According to Statistics Canada’s Labour Force Survey for October 2009, Canada’s employment rate creeped up to 8.6% in October, meaning the recession was still affecting Canadians, especially in certain sectors.
Most of the decline in employment came from the retail, wholesale trade, and natural resources industries. In fact, since October 2008, employment has fallen in most sectors, with the steepest declines coming in manufacturing and natural resources, both down by 11%, and construction, transportation, and warehousing, all hovering between a 4%-6% decrease. For the same time, there were sector increases in information, culture and recreation, finance, insurance, real estate, and leasing.
Good news for job seekers
So while all news is not good on the Canadian job front, there are reasons to be optimistic. There are numerous positions that are in demand. Real estate agents have been on the rise since 2004 and employment growth was also strong among postsecondary teaching and research assistants. Canada’s expanding spa industry continues to grow exponentially year-to-year, as many estheticians, electrologists, and related occupations find work at spas or become self-employed.
While the oil and gas industry, which has experienced rapid growth in recent years, is beginning to slow down in some parts of Alberta and Saskatchewan, there are still a slew of openings for oil and gas well drillers, servicers, and testers, and a high demand for supervisors in oil and gas drilling.
The high-tech industry is still experiencing growth, with employers and recruiters trying to find skilled network analysts, database administrators, computer software engineers, and programmers on a continuous basis.
Sectors and positions experiencing growth
While it varies according to province, other sectors on the rise include healthcare, financial services, alternative energy, gaming, and government.
Meanwhile, take a quick look at the Monster, CareerBuilder, and Craigslist job boards and you’ll find some positions in extremely high demand, such as nurses, dental hygienists, pharmacy technicians, Java and .Net developers, financial and business analysts, recruiters, and project managers.
Methods of preparation for career/job change
Many Canadians are currently reassessing their careers or job status in the face of the economic recession. With the manufacturing industry in peril, many employees, both current and recently laid off, are looking to jump into another sector. But what can you do if you want to change career paths but have no degree or relevant job experience in that new domain?
Online learning: a bevy of choices
With the proliferation of Canadian and U.S.-based online universities, the answer is right at your fingertips. Job candidates have never been so eager to learn new trades, or supplement their own education with useful certifications and affiliations. And many are doing it while they work. With online courses growing in popularity (and relevance) over the last two years, job seekers have never before had such affordable, easy access to education. Many Canadian universities offer online courses with designated certifications or diplomas. There are also a plethora of credible online universities who are taking advantage of the need to learn, and learn quickly. Some of the better ones online are Canadian Virtual University, University Canada West, University of Phoenix, Thompson Rivers University, and George Brown College.
So while employment sectors experience growth and decline, job candidates are doing their own research – into industry analysis, salary comparisons, job prospects, and required education. Top that off with a quality resume and cover letter, and job seekers will be ahead of the game – and in high demand.
